ARE YOU BUYING DOMAIN NAMES BECAUSE YOU THINK IT WILL HELP YOUR SEO?
A Brief History Of How This Worked
In the infancy of SEO, domain names play a pivotal role in your rankings with Google and other major search engines. Here’s how it worked…Let’s use Smile Eye Center as an example. Smile would purchase SmileEyeCenter.com as their main domain name, but to be found for LASIK, they would purchase SmileLASIKSacramento.com, SmileLASIKSacramentoCounty.com, SmileLASIKEyeSurgerySacramento.com and so on. Simply by redirecting those domain name or setting up duplicate websites on the domain names, they would easily rank for these keyword terms.
As with anything in SEO, Google evolved and started penalizing for this practice. Google’s #1 goal is to display the most relevant information for any search query. This practice of multiple websites became known as duplicate content which was harmful to your SEO and they no longer recognized other domain names redirecting to your domain name as value.
This practice was abandoned over a decade ago, but surprisingly SEO companies haven’t educated business owners as we still have business owners purchasing domain names thinking it will help with SEO.
IS THERE VALUE IN KEEPING OR PURCHASING OTHER DOMAIN NAMES?
This is a question I’m often approached with. There is only value in purchasing other domain names for your SEO if you have a plan to use it and stick with it. If you have the means and/or budget to develop other websites & blogs using this domain name, then yes there is value.
The way to use additional domain names is to develop a separate website that you will maintain, update and create content for. With the correct plan, this can be a valuable resource to build links back to your main website, which will benefit your SEO. For this to effectively pay off, you need to spend time on this second website/blog by building authority and value. If Google doesn’t see value in this website, the benefit for SEO will be minimal.
The only other time I’d suggest purchasing additional domain names is to block competitors from purchasing keyword rich domain names and start doing SEO for themselves.
